Cookbook Review: Mary Margaret McBride Encyclopedia of Cooking

Dear Readers,

I have been wanting to write about the cookbooks that I have been reading. the truth is, that I was trying to figure out if there were laws on copyrights and such. I think that I can safely write about cookbooks without violating any of the laws.

I admit to having a collection of cookbooks. They are lovely. Some with writing in...."great" or "used applesauce" even the occasional "worst ever". I love old cookbooks and new alike. The first review I have for you is one that I recently obtained from the Sequoya library here in Madison WI.   http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/ What a wonderful used book sale! All to benefit our libraries. Please check out your local library to see if they have sales too. You will not be disappointed!

Editor in Chief: Anne London
Test Kitchen Manager: Esther Burns
Copyright: 1959

Overall first Impressions:
        Interesting
Big for a cookbook in 1959
Has a "removing  spots and stains" section
        Index is large

Noteworthy Recipes:
        Oxtail Soup
        Stuffed Frankfurters
        Jiffy Fish Casserole
        Lukshen Kugel
        High Altitude Cake Recipes
Welsh Rabbit (found in the cheese section)

The originality of this gem, is what initially caught my eye. I did a little research after I got home and discovered that this was originally published in 12 sections which could be purchased at the local grocery store. Once complete, the owner could put them together to create the cookbook. This is a heartwarming look a a time when home cooking and family meals were the center of family life. It is refreshing to read the traditional recipes especially the breads section.

Recipes to try:
        Butter Chews
        Scotch Teas
        Old Fashioned Raisin Bars

Overall, I would recommend that you check this book out! If you are able to buy a copy, please do. You will be happy you did!

Bon Appetit!
